Instagram can seem like a puzzle, can’t it? The second you’ve nailed down one skill, you need to become proficient in the next skill in order to keep growing. And understanding the ever-changing algorithm? Forget it! For tips on how to navigate the evolving Instagram landscape, we tapped Dre Fox, the CEO and founder of TimeOfDre Media.

“In my years as a social media expert over at TimeOfDre Media, I’ve seen every change, every challenge that creators have on their journey, and have dedicated my career to helping small businesses and personal brands navigate the landscape to help their mission thrive,” explains Fox. Scroll on for part one of her three-part Instagram series.

Ahead, she breaks down how to craft an Instagram bio that will get you “fast follows” on social media.

Why Is Your Bio Important?

Sure, your Instagram feed, your images, and your aesthetic are all part of the equation, but your bio is your marquee, that one chance to really show to the world why your account is packed full of something they want.

The way I like to describe this to clients is to view it like a micro-business card explaining what it is that you do, the value you bring to a potential follower, and how you help your community. It is that friendly wave hello that really intrigues someone to click “follow” or conversely, turns others away.

It may seem unimportant and overlooked, but when your mission isn't clear and ENGAGING to your ideal follower, they have made their decision within 3 seconds whether or not to follow you.

How Do Your Create a Bio That Achieves Your Goals?

Let’s start at the top!

Your Photo

This is such a big opportunity to start connecting with a potential follower right away! Select a profile photo that resonates with your brand and shows off your personality. Keep your face and eyes to the camera and avoid dark, far away images that don’t show off who you are!

The Name Field

Did you know this is the one queryable area of your account besides your screen name? That means that I can discover new accounts by the keywords they have in the name field. Oftentimes I see people simply put their name, but that is not as effective as adding in a keyword so searchers can find you. Are you a coach? Say it in the name field! Are you a content creator? Include that info in your name field!

Example: Dre | Instagram Business Coach

How Do You Structure the Body of Your Bio?

Here is where you need to be very thoughtful with your message! Your bio is not a place to share you’re a dog mom, coffee lover, or travel addict, it is your time to demonstrate your value to a potential follower.

The Magic Formula

  • I provide value to or I help  (Insert the type of person)

  • To learn/accomplish (what you can help anyone with)

  • So that (benefit)

  • Without (non-negotiable)

Example: I help budding entrepreneurs market themselves online so they can build thriving empires without sacrificing time.

Bragging Rights

This does not apply to all accounts. What makes you capable and qualified to help or be my go-to on this subject? This could include: books that you have written, things you’re the host of, certifications you hold, major accomplishments in your niche

Your Contact

How do I get in touch with you? Learn more? Work with you? Include that info right in your bio so that your followers can connect with you outside the social media platform.

Highlights

Highlights are one area of the bio that is often misused because they can easily turn into personal scrapbooks with no value to others. These are where people learn MORE about your business or how they can work with you so ensure they are full of information that excites and intrigues your followers.

One highlight I always recommend having is the “Start Here” or “About Me” option and have that one be an amazing story about you and what you offer.

The Link

Do you have a link in your bio? Great! But don't forget to have a strong "call to action" as to WHY people are clicking the link In your bio. They won't know what the link contains or why they care so without this, you are losing traffic.

Examples:

  • Learn More

  • New Blog Post

  • Collection Live

Once you’ve worked through your bio using the steps above, review it objectively like you are a stranger coming across your account for the first time. Is it clear what you do and why I would follow you? Are you presenting yourself as you’d like? Once you feel comfortable, you should be ready to get some fast follows!
